🍎 Maison Hérout: organic cider and spirits from the Cotentin peninsula

🍎 Maison Hérout : le cidre et les spiritueux bio du Cotentin

Cider is one of the living symbols of French agricultural traditions. Yet, behind each bottle lies a terroir, a microclimate, and a know-how that shape its unique character.

With Maison Hérout, cider regains its full dimension: an artisanal product, 100% pure juice, organic and naturally effervescent, born in the heart of the Cotentin and shaped by generations of enthusiasts.

A family-run cider house that originated in Auvers

Founded in 1946 in Auvers by Auguste and Marie-Thérèse Hérout, Maison Hérout is one of the oldest organic cider houses in Normandy.

From the very beginning, the family relied on orchards of high and low stem trees, composed of local varieties of cider apples with bitter and bittersweet profiles, characteristic of the Cotentin terroir.

Since the 1970s, the estate has been certified Organic Agriculture, with a certified organic orchard and a strong commitment: to produce natural ciders, without artificial carbonation or pasteurization.

A unique Breton-Norman terroir

The Cotentin is a peninsula shaped by the Atlantic Ocean and sea winds, a climate that favors apples with low sugar content but rich in aromatics.

This combination gives Maison Hérout products a dry, complex and balanced aromatic signature — a style that sometimes approaches that of great wines.

Natural and vibrant vintages

All Maison Hérout ciders are made from 100% pure organic apple juice, with natural carbonation in the bottle, without the addition of gas.

A demanding, artisanal production

Unlike many industrial ciders, Maison Hérout's products are neither carbonated nor pasteurized. Fermentation occurs naturally, expressing the full richness of the apples and the terroir.

The estate relies on more than 25 local varieties, including a majority of bitter or bittersweet apples which give the wines their fruity, dry and complex profile, ideal with seafood, cheeses or traditional Norman dishes.

Transmission and recognition

Maison Hérout played a key role in the creation of the AOC Cidre Cotentin, an official recognition of the unique style and cider-making know-how of the region.

Today, the house continues to pass on this family tradition, carried on by local players committed to authenticity, biodiversity and excellence.
