🎂 The birth of Terroir: creating a grocery store focused on taste and meaning

🎂 La naissance de Terroir : créer une épicerie autour du goût et du sens

Terroir began with a simple wish: to offer French products with a clear origin, an honest taste and a real story.
Not an accumulation of lines, but a considered selection, built around terroir, craft and respect for the product.

This shop didn’t come from an abstract business plan, but from looking closely at what we eat day to day.

A wish to get back to essentials

Over time the food on offer has grown wider, more standardised and sometimes disconnected from where it came from. Products travel far, recipes are smoothed out, and the link with the people who make them slowly disappears.

Terroir came out of that observation: it had become hard to know where products really come from, how they are made and why they taste as they do.

The idea wasn’t to offer “more”, but to offer better.

Building a shop differently

From the start, Terroir was conceived as a shop of selection, not a platform of volume.
Every product was chosen individually, taking the time to understand its origin, its making and the producer’s approach.

That way of working takes more time, more conversations and more deliberate choices. But it builds a coherent range, faithful to a clear vision.

Meeting the producers

Terroir grew at the pace of its conversations with producers.
Exchanges, questions, tastings, sometimes doubts and often confirmation.

Out of that came a direct relationship built on trust, listening and mutual respect. It sits today at the heart of the shop’s identity.

A gradual, deliberate opening

Terroir didn’t open in a hurry.
The catalogue was deliberately kept small, to guarantee a legible and coherent selection.

Each new line enriches the whole without unbalancing it. That controlled growth keeps the original spirit intact, with no compromise.

Why a French grocer in the Netherlands

Setting Terroir up in the Netherlands answered an obvious need: there is real curiosity here about French products, but also a want of clear markers.

Terroir speaks as much to the well-informed as to anyone who would like to discover the French terroir differently, with explanation and transparency.

Thanks

This venture wouldn’t exist without the people who supported me, closely or from afar, throughout the making of Terroir.
Their advice, their support, their encouragement and sometimes simply their presence counted far more than they imagine.

Thank you to Lisa, my father, Jean, Mathieu, Coco, Gilles, Mathieu, Thomas, Léma, Simon, Fabian, Lylianne, Nienke, Chris, Chantal, Catherine, Mathew, Jean-Paul & Cécile, Klazien, Douwe, Tein, Hélène and Ludivine for their help, their trust, and the energy and enthusiasm they brought to the project at different moments.

And finally, particular thanks to Hugo. For his constant support, his availability, his valuable advice and his ability to be there in moments of doubt as well as of enthusiasm. His outside view, always on the mark, did a great deal to move Terroir forward with calm and clarity.

Terroir is also the reflection of those exchanges, of often quiet help, and of the meetings that give meaning to the road travelled.

A venture that is only beginning

The official opening of Terroir marks the start of a venture, not its conclusion.
The shop will keep evolving, enriched by new meetings and new products, always within the line it was founded on.

Terroir will go on defending a certain idea of taste: demanding, approachable and deeply tied to its origin.

WELCOME TO THE TERROIR ADVENTURE.
